For 2011, the BMW 5 Series is redesigned into its sixth generation, with an all-new body, and new engines and drivetrains. This includes a new TwinPower six-cylinder engine, 4.4-litre Twin Turbo V8, new eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric power steering.
The rear-wheel drive 550i Gran Turismo is discontinued, replaced with two all-wheel drive versions, while the M5 is not available for 2011.
The 5 Series sedan is available as the 528i with 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine; as the 535i with TwinPower (single twin-scroll) turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine; and as the 550i with 4.4-litre TwinPower V8. The 535i and 550i are also available in all-wheel xDrive configuration. The Gran Turismo comes as the 535i xDrive, with TwinPower turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder, and as the 550i xDrive with TwinTurbo V8. All come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but the 535i and 550i can be optioned with a six-speed manual.
Features on the 528i include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, active front head restraints, adaptive brake lights, ten-way power heated “leatherette” seats, driver’s side memory, power tilt and telescopic steering column, cruise control, adaptive xenon headlamps with cornering lights, power-folding auto-dimming heated mirrors, fog lamps, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, rain-sensing wipers, power sunroof, BMW Assist, controller with seven-inch display, CD/MP3 stereo with 12 speakers, USB port, auxiliary input, and Bluetooth connectivity.
The 535i adds 18-inch alloy wheels, Dakota leather upholstery, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, park distance control, and comfort access system.
The 535i xDrive adds headlight washers.
The 550i adds 19-inch alloy wheels, high-gloss shadow line, anthracite roof liner, dynamic driving control, comfort seats, sport steering wheel, BMW TeleServices, controller with 10.2-inch display, 16-speaker stereo, navigation system with 12-GB audio file storage, and voice control system.
The 550i xDrive is similarly equipped.
The Gran Turismo 535i xDrive and 550i xDrive are similarly equipped to the sedan models, but feature a dual-opening rear hatch.
